What happens during a dental exam if it’s a new appointment versus when someone who has a problem?
For any new patient who comes in for a dental exam at Murfreesboro Family Dentistry, we first assess if it is a problem focused exam, meaning the patient is having a problem, or if it is a new patient exam. For a problem focused exam, we address just that particular problem. However, if someone comes in for a new patient exam, we’ll take a handful of X-rays, and take a few inter-oral pictures. The dentist will take a look at your mouth and then review everything with you.
My philosophy is if you can’t see it, you don’t know what’s going on. So we take the time to make sure that we educate you on that. If you need treatment like a root canal or a crown, we’ll explain how that works. We will go over any concerns and discuss if you have a need for periodontal therapy or gum disease treatments. Or you may just need prophylactic care or a traditional dental cleaning.
When you use the pick, the metal pokey tool, what are you doing?
We are basically looking for any type or of signs of disease. Whether that be periodontal disease or gum disease or any type of dental cavities or anything like that. Those are all of our little pokey tools that we use to diagnose any type of dental disease. That’s our primary concern for your dental exam at our office – looking for problems, treating them, and preventing additional problems in the future.
